Why do they call it the boob tube when they almost never show boobs?

It's from the old slang definition of "boob" as "a stupid person", implying TV is for stupid people.

Why is it that the media has no problems whatsoever airing shootouts, and bloody corpses, and acts of violence. Yet a NIPPLE sends everyone in an uproar and then they get fined!
