Apparently they sent the society reporter out to cover a story on LAN parties.

Here are couple of sample quotes from the article:

But high-powered temporary servers called local area networks, or LANs, enable computers in a concentrated area to communicate.

Oh, so that's what a server is.  I learn something new every day.

Gamers mechanically swig designer caffeine drinks, their eyes sweating with the possibility of a virtual escape, their mouths motoring off instructions.

I suppose there's nothing technically wrong with this line, but I have this mental image of sweat beads forming on the eyeballs when I read it.

Who knew there were these things called LAN parties - then again, I only learned of them about 15 years ago.

Don't know about eyeballs sweating, but I have heard the expression "floating eyeballs" used to refer to the situation where you've had three cups of coffee, then get stuck in a meeting that drags on for two hours.

First off,
"...almost ritualistic convocation of gamers that has been springing up - almost invisibly - all over the world."
It takes more time than that to organize a decent LAN party, imo.

Second of all,
using a sentence such as: "...a dozen boys and men between the ages of 10 and 40 sat squinting..." and the word "orgies" in the same article is just down right dirty.

Thirdly,
maybe this is just me, but isn't "Spray and prey" supposed to be "Spray and pray"? As in, you spray bullets all over the place and pray to hit someone, anyone.
