Now that I have them (the latest Semagic supports them), what do I do with them?

Has anyone out there created a semi-standardized list of keywords and what to use them for?  I think they'd be a lot more useful if everyone used the same base keywords for the same basic purpose.  For example if I click on the "meme" tag, I should reasonably expect it to bring up a list of that person's memes rather than, say, ever instance where he or she has posted a goatse picture.

Of course I can merrily bounce away and create my own custom list of keywords, but I can't promise that they'll be meaningful or consistent.

Well, there's a couple of things that can be useful about tags. If your journal is searchable by Technorati, that will make your entry easier to find. Eventually, I would hope someone (either LJ or third-party) would come up with a tool to search across journals for a given tag, a la Flickr. I think things are still in the early stages now, though, so the functionality is limited.

One other thing I'm intrigued about: You can set your journal so that (friends|select groups of friends|the public) can modify tags on your entries. While this could turn very bad, I think it still has some cool possibilities.

I'm using them like a categorisation system. So, I've got tags for "diary" but also "photos" and "links" for "Hey click here!" posts and also "weather" and "news" for comments on news stories...

I don't really care what tags other people are using since there aren't any functions right now to view posts with a particular tag from anyone.

Alternatively, you can turn on the option to let anyone tag your posts and see what happens...
