VILLAGE WHERE A LITTLE DOG'S TERROR IS USED TO PREDICT THE FUTURE
Mar 7 2005
SUPERSTITIOUS Bulgarian villagers believe terrified dogs are the key to a prosperous future.
Every year, the village of Brodilovo hold a 'trichana na kuche' - dog's spin - ceremony.
They tie dogs to a device made of two twisted ropes and spin them round, frightening them so badly they empty their bowels.
Villagers believe, according to ancient custom, that the more faeces the dogs produce, the healthier and wealthier the year will be for Brodilovo and its inhabitants.

I admit that for a change I'm actually more appalled than amused.

Date: 2005-05-30 08:41 pm (UTC)I notice how the dog's toes are spread out as if to extend its reach or increase its chances of grabbing something, even though it doesn't really extend its reach more than a few millimetres. Vestigial reflex possibly. Poor doggy.
I suppose it is also considered good luck in Brodilovo to catch some of the turds full-on in the face. "Oh, look who's getting married next!" :-P

Date: 2005-06-01 10:37 am (UTC)I mean, it's 2005. We've been civilised for almost 5,000 years and we still can't get past this kind of stupidity?
Oh wait - homeopathics - scientology - crystal therapy - aura therapy - astrology - faith healing - I guess we can't.

- Pictures that could easily be faked.
- Can't be independently verified easily.
