Jan. 11th, 2004 01:01 amThe neighbor stopped by for a surprise visit this afternoon and delivered some news that was not a surprise at all: he and his wife are going to sell their house and move into an apartment. They're both getting up in years, and their health is failing. She's not been well lately, and in the past few months he's been reduced to hobbling around with a cane.
This news is a bit distressing. They've been my neighbors for almost 8 years (and they are the only ones with whom I am on speaking terms). Admittedly we've been guilty of ducking to avoid them outside on occasion because he will talk your ear off when he sees you, but they're good folk and good neighbors. I just hope they sell the house to equally good people. We'll have to make sure we get out there to meet the new buyers before anyone else in the area does.
"Hi, we're the folks next door. The other people in this neighborhood, they may... say things about us - but they're damn liars!"
