I'm looking at flights to replace our ill-fated Winnipeg/Vancouver flight. I'm debating over flying into Abbotsford instead since a friend out there has offered to lend us his car for the week if we fly in that way. VERY tempting.
Anyway, let's check out some numbers.
This airline books one-way fares, but it's the same both ways in this case (it's not always) at $215 per person. That's $860 return. That's reasonable for a return flight for two. But wait...
For the outward leg:
$23.00 Nav-Ins (insurance?)
$18.04 GST
$15.00 AIF (Airport Improvement Fee)
$4.67 ATSC (Security tax)
=$60.71 each. OK, so that's another $121.42. But wait...
For the return leg:
$23.00 Nav-Ins
$17.69 GST
$10.00 AIF (I didn't think that Abbotsford had one of these)
$4.67 ATSC
=$55.36 each. That's another $110.72 added to the cost.
This means that we are paying $232.14 on a $860 flight - or just about 27%. O_o
If a lender tried to charge us that rate on a loan, they'd be accussed of usury.
