A barely coherent co-worker called me a few minutes ago to inform me that he wasn't coming in today, and he would be taking the rest of the week off as vacation time.

I'm gettin' tired of this shit.  When people come in here asking for him, I feel like an idiot when I tell them that he's "cashing in some vacation time this week" when everyone knows that he's on another bender.

Just to be the devil's advocate....
Isn't it better for him to book vacation time, in lieu of sick time, when he's on a bender?

I have a couple of co-workers that call in "sick" at least once a month because they got drunk the night before. Everybody knows it, but management refuses to say anything.
Sick days aren't supposed to be used as vacation days. That's why we have vacation time, and sick time.

This isn't something that he does every once in awhile when he goes on a little bender, the guy is an alcoholic. When he starts running short on vacation time then he just comes to work drunk.

Ya, that's fun. He smells like shit, is loud and abusive, and shakes so bad that he can't even pour himself coffee without wearing it.

The depressing thing is that he seemed to be getting his act in gear, and had really cleaned up his act for about 2-3 months. Dunno what set him off this time.
