Tomorrow morning I am going to add a packet of salt to the coffee - but not with malicious intent.  [livejournal.com profile] giza mentioned the it in his journal, and it's something that I remember mom told me nearly 20 years ago, so I know it's not a new trick.  The coffee in our little office really can't get any worse, so I'm going to try the salt trick and see if it gets any better.

Besides, we all need more salt in our diets, don't we?

Its apparently an old Naval trick. My father told me that the mess always put some salt into the pot before brewing. Makes bitter/overly strong coffee less so.

I was intrigued..and gave it a try once. Its surprising how well it *does* work.

You sure it was salt?

My MSC and MS1 told me to use cinnamon, not salt?

The type of salt that is used for softening water is different, but I can't help but think that table salt may have a similar softening effect.

Actually, the salt in a water softener doesn't soften the water. What it does is restore the ion exchange resin. This resin binds positive ions, such as calcium. In strong brine the calcium is displaced from the resin by sodium ions; in fresher water the reaction goes the other way. Some sodium does end up in your drinking water, but the softening comes from the removal of the calcium, which would otherwise tend to form scale.
