atara got her replacement iPod yesterday, and she was a bit appalled when she picked it up at UPS. When she shipped off the old one, Apple couriered us a special box for it that was so solid and well-padded that we could have mailed an egg back to them without fear of damage. When they sent her a replacement it came in an envelope. No bubble wrap, no guardian ninjas, just a plain, modestly-padded paper envelope. It does not appear to have been damaged in transit, and it works, so no harm done.
