Year In Pictures: 2010/04/20
Apr. 20th, 2010 09:36 pmWe walked up to The Tallest Poppy for lunch today. It is located in the New Occidental Hotel, just a couple of blocks north of the museum on Main Street. Locals may remember this hotel as a scummy dive where the lowest of the low would occasionally gather to kill a few brain cells and, occasionally, each other. It came under new ownership a few years back, and the first thing the new owner did was turn off the beer taps and convert the bar into an alcohol-free coffee bar. I have not been into the bar side of the hotel, but the Poppy is really quite nice inside.
The Tallest Poppy fits in with the growing art culture in The Exchange District, as evidenced by this cute diorama in the front window. It's like an oasis of class in an otherwise sketchy part of town.
They bill themselves as part of the "slow food" revolution. From the time we arrived until we were served our food was close to 40 minutes, but it was hot and fresh and delicious. We are definitely making at least one more trip back there, albeit not on a day when we are in a hurry.
atara ordered a chicken-basil marinara sandwich, and I opted for the blue plate, which was a lamb meatloaf sandwich and mixed-greens salad. The salad came with a little cup of dressing on the side. I'm usually not a fan of plain oil & vinegar dressings because too many are heavy on the vinegar and light on the oil. This one was almost entirely oil, with just enough vinegar to let you know that it was there. It was nice, and did not completely overpower the greens. I promptly dribbled it on my dress shirt.

The lighting was really bad for this picture, and I purposely under-exposed it a bit in the hopes that I could bring out a bit of the detail outside the window and not totally blow out the details on the ferns. Alas, that did not entirely work, but I don't think the picture is a total wash. I shot it at 200ISO, with an aperture of f/2.0 at 1/60th of a second. I corrected the exposure for "shade", boosted the saturation a bit to compensate for the wash of light from behind, and sharpened it a bit.
I did not take part in the activities up at the legislature, but I think this picture shows where my sympathies lie. Happy 420 to all who chose to partake in today's activities.

Finally, behind the cut is another picture of the same scene at Tallest Poppy. There is a curious pattern apparently being projected on the statue in this shot. I took four more pictures with different settings and exposures, and all of them had this strange projection in them.
atara and I both puzzled over this a bit, and she even got up and stood in one of the pictures to see if the effect would project on her. It did. On a hunch, I shot a picture with the UV filter removed, and the effect went away. I have never noticed this effect before with the filter, but I am not happy about it because it is probably showing up in a lot of high-contrast pictures that I take, and it just wasn't as pronounced as it was here. I guess I will just have to be careful about what I am shooting with the filter on the lens.
