St. Norbert
Jun. 6th, 2009 11:35 amIf there is one thing that can roust us out of bed at 6:00 on a Saturday, it's the St. Norbert Farmers' Market. Today was the start of a new season for them, so we dragged ourselves out of the house around 7:45 this morning and hit the road to get there ahead of the crowds - making only a small detour to pick up money (and some Tim Hortons coffee for
plonq). Neither of us expected to find a lot of fresh produce available this early in the season, but we were both surprised by the lack people at the market. Not only did we get one of the coveted parking spots on the street right in front of the market, but the vendors almost outnumbered the shoppers.
As expected, the bulk of the items for sale were bedding plants and crafts, but we still managed to score some fresh asparagus, baby bok choy and zucchini. We also grabbed some bison farmer sausage and jerky, and a jar of buckwheat honey from a local producer. The buckwheat honey is something that I have been wanting to try for awhile, but
atara has been reluctant to buy something that looks more like molasses than honey. The vendor was offering samples of 8-9 different honeys (wild flower, sunflower, strawberry, etc). I immediately asked if I could try a sample of the buckwheat, and she practically slapped my hand away as I was reaching for the squeeze bear of honey.
"Sorry, you have to try that one last. You'll understand when you try it."
I tasted a couple of the other honeys, then finally got to try the buckwheat. As soon as I tasted it, I understood why she insisted that I try that one last. In my experience the flavour that different flowers imparts on honey is fairly subtle, but there was nothing subtle about the buckwheat. If I had tried that one first, the others would have been flavourless in comparison. Needless to say I bought a small jar of it on the spot. If it is too overpowering for toast, it will still be very good in some of the herbal teas/coffee substitutes that I drink from time to time.
As soon as I post this, I am going to deal with a letter that we got from Sirius yesterday. Our new car came equipped with a satellite radio, and a free 3-month subscription to Sirius that we could activate at any time. Yesterday we got a letter from them dated May 22nd thanking us for activating our service, and advising us that it was only free until July 22nd.
Wait a minute -- our three months of free service runs from May 22 to July 22? Math may not be my strongest suit, but aside from the fact that neither of us actually activated this service (we checked when we were in the car today, and we are definitely not getting satellite radio in the car), that looks like only two months of service to me. Today I am going to call them to say, "Wtf dude? And also, wtf?"
I queued up this video a couple of days ago, and I'm sure that I had some kind of poignant comments to include with it, but I got busy and never got around to posting it. What I like about Bill Maher is that he says what a lot of us are just thinking sometimes. I think that Rick Mercer would be about the closest thing we have to a Maher on this side of the border.
