Gygax fails his final saving throw...
Mar. 4th, 2008 02:00 pmI cannot read LJ at work these days, but I am sure that I am not the first to post about this. If it was not for E. Gary Gygax and his group,
atara and I would have lives today. World of Warcraft and other MMORPG games owe their existence to pen & paper geeks sitting around the table saying, "It's a shame we can't play this on-line!"
Somewhere around the house I still have the re-printed paperback versions of the original Dungeons and Dragons (complete with Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Chainmail...) that I bought about 25 years ago. I used slightly modified versions of the original D&D system for awhile before moving on to other gaming systems of the day.
We had a fledgling pen & paper RPG group going for awhile after I moved out here a few years back, but it fizzled when
boinggoat moved away. While I miss the dynamics of desktop gaming, I don't miss the headache of trying to browbeat people into consistently showing up for regular games.
Anyway, even though you can't hear me, thanks Gary. My years of geekery and gaming played a large part in making me what I am today.
