I just came back from a special Health & Safety meeting where they announced that after years of bitter kvetching, our office finally got one of these:

Shocking new development!

I am thinking that one of the higher-ups in HR must have finally got a chance to try the cafeteria food in our building.

I'd like the double-grease cheese-like burger with a side of greasy poutine - and don't skimp on the mayo please.

Yeah, that CAN NOT be the actual graphic on top of the AED. If it is, I'm buying one just to put it on eBay to sell for a gazilion dollars.

Ah, now I can see the picture at home.
Too funny! lol

Plonq has been known to - ahm - alter photos for comic purposes. ;)

I am familiar with the hand gesture, yes. =)

A couple of us had been joking about "the shocker" during the meeting, and when I returned to my desk to post about it, I did a quick Photoshop to make the label more appropriate. I actually did it as a joke for some of my co-workers, but I decided to use that image in my LJ when I posted.

According to [livejournal.com profile] atara I did "too good a job", and it wasn't as obvious as I'd hoped it would be that it was just a quick photo manipulation.

Anyway, that's the logo that I would use if I was marketing a line of defibrillators.

Just a quick Photoshop tweak on the picture while I was finishing my coffee. But darn it all, that is what should be the logo on the machine. =)

It's almost scary how easy it is now to do something like this in a paint program. I used the clone tool to erase the old logo, did some quick blending, and then smudged it around the edges. I cut out the "shocker" hand from another picture on Google images, dropped it onto the defibrillator as a new layer and re-sized it down to fit.

I merged the layers, and applied a circular blur to the whole image to further mask traces that it was a cut & paste job, then shrunk the image down to the size that I wanted. Finally I applied an un-sharp mask to bring back some of the details that I lost with the blur. Total investment of time (including the image search) -- about 5 minutes.

I laugh every time I see this thing again now. It seemed like such a logical thing to do to label a shocking device with a shocking gesture..ahem.

I'm back

Sorry about leaving like that, you know how I am.

BTW, what in the blue hell is that?

It's a defibrillator. They're going to mount it on the wall near the center of the office so that if anyone decides to have a heart attack at work, we can grab the defibrillator and make things worse with a few high-voltage shocks to the chest. Fun.

I just hope that we never have to use it. There is nothing quite as reassuring as the thought that if I ever experience heart trouble at work, I can count on some panicky, under-qualified person to pump high-voltage electricity through my body.

Putting my profession aside, these things are practically idiot-proof.

1. Everything is clearly labeled.
2. When you turn it on, it speaks in clear English and tells you what to do step by step.
3. There's no way to shock someone without hearing a loud beep and having someone press a big red button while the clasp is in place.

That said, if you have the opportunity to take it off the wall and open it up to look at it, I'd highly recommend it. Nothing like familiarizing yourself with something to take the mystery and anxiety away.

Your cubicle-farmmate might thank you for it. ;D
