Strawberries and Onions
Jul. 22nd, 2007 05:21 pmWe got up early yesterday and went down to the local farmers' market. For the most part we were just scoping it out to see what was available, but we came home with some fresh potatoes, onions and yellow beans. One of the problems with food that is only a day or two out of the ground is that it spoils you for the produce that you get from the grocery store. Buying it directly from the farmer is cheaper, and better.

Here is a picture of those selfsame onions (less the bundle that we bought). Some might ask why I took a picture of onions. I just find that they have a peel.

After
atara made strawberry jam a couple of weeks back, we still had about half a case of berries left. I made some muffins last weekend, but the rest have been sitting in the fridge slowly ageing. It seems a shame to let all of our picking effort go to waste, so this evening I pulled out the cutting board and sliced up all of the ones that were still edible - actually only about a half-dozen were too far gone to use.
I layered them in a glass container with alternate layers of sugar and then drowned the lot with a 26oz bottle of gin. How will it all turn out? I will know the answer to that in a few weeks.
