The more you know...
Jun. 25th, 2007 01:29 pmOne of the first things I did this morning when I came in was unpack my Bathroom Reader calendar and catch up to the current day. The entry for June 9th was very interesting, in part because more than one person has asked me about this.
Lieutenant
Meaning: A military rank
Origin: Its origin is two French words: Lieu (place) and tenant (holding), and it literally means "place-holder." The term was used in the French military for lower-grade officers who take the place of a captain. (The English pronounce it "Leftenant" due to an early printing confusion between u and v.)
Now you know.
