Whither democracy?

I'm going to head off and do my civic duty later today, even though the best choice is no choice at all in this election.  I thoroughly detest the leaders of the three big parties this time around.  While one might think my choice comes down to selecting the least bad choice, for me the decision lies much closer to home.  The conservative lady running in my riding has to be one of the stupidest people in politics today - and that's saying a lot.  I will cast whatever ballot I think it takes to keep her out of office.  I almost don't care who gets in, as long as she doesn't.

Last year I cast a protest vote for the NDP, and the Conservative church lady squeaked in by a narrow margin over the Liberal candidate.  I wish the ballots had an option for "Anybody but XXX".  I'm going to vote for the Liberal candidate this time around, but I have a sinking feeling the vote is going to get split more on the left as disenchanted Liberals vote for the NDP candidate, and she'll get in with 31% of the vote.  I expect a very low turnout this election - which will help the Conservatives.

My prediction for today:  Voter turnout will be very low, and the Conservatives will get in right at the minority/majority cusp.

If they have a majority of one or two, it could make things interesting.  Harper and his cronies have a way of alienating the moderates in their party, and if they go too far off the deep end, they could end up with one or two of their members crossing the floor to sit as Liberals or Independents, putting them into minority territory.  I think the best outcome would be for a meteor to strike Parliament Hill and make winners of us all.
