I took [livejournal.com profile] atara to La Vieille Gare (The Old Station) for dinner last night.  I had been juggling a number of restaurant ideas over the course of the day, but finally decided on French cuisine since her sole exposure to it since moving up here had been poutine.  Our first decision when we got there was whether we preferred to sit in the old railway dining car (more privacy), or the continental dining room (more romantic). The Maitre d' made the decision for us when he learned that it was our anniversary, and he insisted on seating us at a semi-private table in the main dining lounge.

Dinner was a leisurely affair, running just shy of 2 1/2 hours, but it gave us lots of time to enjoy each others company.  [livejournal.com profile] atara bought me a card.  I forgot.  I didn't get her flowers either.  I'm such a thoughtless cad.

We spent a good twenty minutes nibbling on fresh rolls (Mmmm... onion bread...) and pouring over the menu before we finally made our choices.  [livejournal.com profile] atara decided to start with the Bisque de homard en croûte (Lobster bisque capped with puff pastry) and I settled on my boring old standby of Soupe à l'oignon au gratin (French onion soup with a splash of port).  I won't go into great detail about how wonderful both soups were, but I will say that the port nicely complimented the soup.

For an appetizer, we waffled between the duck pâté and the wild boar before we settled on the Cuisses de grenouille aux basilic et raifort, croustillant de parmesan (Basil & horseradish sautéed Frog Legs with Parmesan crisp).  I'm not sure we went from discussing mammal versus fowl to actually ordering amphibian, but they were darned tasty legs.  As you might imagine, the conversation as we were eating them varied between talking about poor double-amputee frogs, and The Triples of Belleville.

We did a main course of Carré d'agneau en croûte d'herbes, sauce a l'ail caramélisé (rack of lamb) and Faux-filèt de boeuf grillè, sauce au poivre truffée (New York steak) respectively, and then finished the meal with a shared crème brulée with rosemary.  OMG, it was good.  Yum.

After dinner we took a drive up to river and spent the better part of an hour strolling on the (recently opened) Esplanade Riel.  Although it was a tad on the chilly side out in the wind, we found a sheltered spot where we could lean on the rail and watch large blocks of ice crash up against the pilings of the new Provencher bridge.
