Three little cats, each with their own dietary requirements.  Needless to say that feeding time can become an interesting exercise in patience and logistics.  Jaws gets the dental diet because of her bad teeth.  She's had so many pulled that I proposed a name change to "Gums".  Belladonna gets - well, she gets dental diet too now because it's just easier that way.  Merry gets kitten food because she's a growing girl.  The feeding routine has definitely become a bit more complicated in our house.

Here is the routine for a typical evening feeding:

Pick up the food dishes.  The presence of three hungry, demanding cats makes this a trickier chore than it should be.
Fill the large dishes with dental diet.  Move the kitten, who has parked herself where Jaws' food dish goes.
Fill the small food dish with kitten food.  Step on, or trip over a random cat.  Move the kitten again.
Put down Belladonna's food dish first.  Move the kitten and put down Jaw's food dish.
Pick up the kitten in one hand and her food dish in the other.  Plant them both at the other end of the kitchen.  Turn around and chase Jaws and Belladonna away from the kitten's food dish.  Observe that all cats are at the appropriate food dishes and appear to be eating.
Leave the room for 30 seconds.  Return.
Note that the kitten is now eating Belladonna's dental food, while the latter is nowhere to be seen.  Jaws is just about to bury her nose in the kitten's food dish, but she quickly slinks away from it again with her ears laid back the moment she sees you enter the room.
Shake your head.
Sigh.
Leave the room and reason that as long as none of them are obviously starving, you may as well let them sort things out among themselves.

Put out a big dish-o-dental for the kitten as well. She'll become so disgusted at being anticipated that she'll eat the kitten food out of spite :)

The problem is that the dental food comes in the form of huge kibbles that she can barely get her little kitten mouth around. We bought her kitten food because she was having trouble eating the other stuff.

Given their druthers, the other two cats would definitely prefer to have kitten food over their dental diet; they make that quite plain at feeding time. It's quite enough of a chore having three cats. I don't know how those crazy cat people with 15 or more cats remain sane.

Oh... wait...

After a million cats I've become completely blase about dealing with their quirks- if something has to be done then I'll just use my size and opposable thumb superiority to get it done. Cat needs special food? Physically remove other cats outside. Cat wants to go outside, then inside 5 minutes later, then back outside 5 minutes after that, repeat throughout the day? Leave cat outside for 2 hours until it REALLY wants to come back and avoids the door for the rest of the day.

I'm so mean, my cats would be proud if I weren't doing it to them.

Cat wants to go outside

They can want to go outside all they like, it ain't going to happen. These are strictly indoor cats. That's ONE hassle we don't have to deal with anyway.
