I called my doctor's office today to pester them for results on last week's x-rays. I buggered up my knee late in the summer, and though it seemed to clear up on its own, it's been getting progressively worse again over the past couple of weeks. It's not debilitating - yet - but it's painful enough to be costing me sleep at night, and to make me leery of taking stairs.

Whatever is wrong is mostly affected by lateral movements at the knee. If I walk at a slow(ish), even pace, it's fine. Likewise it does not bother me at all on my bike. It's stiff, and a bit noisy when I walk or ride, but at least it doesn't hurt. When I lie down, though, I have to pick a very specific position in which to like to avoid putting any sidelong pressure on the knee, and if I roll over in the night, the pain will often wake me up again.

It woke me at about 1:30 this morning, and between trying to find a comfortable position for it, and my brain getting caught in a loop of guilt and remorse over the cat, I didn't get back to sleep until sometime after 4:00. It's not like I need to be up early for anything these days, but losing too much sleep is not healthy for anyone.

It was fine for most of yesterday, and I even got out for a decent walk around the neighbourhood. When we went shopping in the evening, though, I gave a bit of debris a gentle flick with the outside of my right foot as we were walking down one of the aisles, and I almost collapsed from the searing pain that motion triggered in my knee. I hobbled and limped the rest of the time out shopping, and my knee was sore for the rest of the evening.

I guess if I was not so stubborn I could take some pain killer for it, but I don't want to get caught up into a cycle of stronger and stronger medications for the pain - I want to find out what's wrong and address it at a physical level. If that means I need to wear a brace for awhile, I'll do it. If it needs cortisone shots or the like, I'm down with that. I'm just kinda getting tired of being in pain.

I suspect that my doctor will take a look at the x-rays and say, "Well, I don't see anything in the x-rays, so you will need to go see a soft-tissue expert at a sports clinic." Which is fine, I guess. As long as I get some firm direction to move toward recover, I'll do what it takes.

This is what happens when you leave me in charge of dinner. "Well, we've got a jar of sun dried tomatoes, some spinach linguine, and some fresh garlic. I bet I could make something from that."
