There are some classics that have a permanent space on my bookshelf, although I daresay they would not be your cup of tea (I particularly like Jane Austen, and I have an unreasonable fondness for the Bronte sisters).
I do remember reading The Scarlet Pimpernel as a teenager and really really liking it- the original superhero novel!- but I haven't read it as an adult, so I'm not sure if I would recommend it.
The Classics are familiar because the themes have been revisited over and over again in media. I wouldn't particularly be bothered myself if you don't enjoy them or wish to read them. :)
