Last week I tried my second attempt at an experimental recipe involving gin and fresh strawberries. I cut the berries into thin slices and spread them out in a jar with alternating layers of sugar. I set it aside with the notion of leaving it for a few months, but it was looking pretty good...

Strawberries and Gin

On a hunch, I checked the Web (is there anything you can't find on the Internet?) and learned that this recipe is only supposed to be left for a week. I poured the mixture off into a spare liquor bottle, and had enough left over to fill a small glass.

Strawberries and Gin 3

It tastes as good as it looks. The only thing part of this recipe that is a bit of a shame is throwing out the rest of the berries. One might expect that they would be pretty good, with all of the alcohol they've soaked up, but they are actually quite foul. All of the sweetness and flavour has been steeped out of them. Yes, they are full of alcohol, but I'd have to be pretty drunk already before I could force myself to eat more than one or two of them. >.<

Now I know what the cats are up to when we're at work...

I'm pleased that these two get along so well together - though we could do without the spontaneous wrestling matches on our bed at 3 in the morning.

The con is about 40 minutes from close, and I must say the weekend sure went by fast. As usual, I didn't get nearly enough time to visit with some of my friends here, but that seems to be a running theme at most conventions I attend.

As you might expect, I made sure to attend as many of the writing panels as I could (not including the two that I help to host). The last one was the "Dark And Stormy Night" writing panel. I wrote two (in my opinion) very bad opening lines that I will gladly share here when (if) I get the hardcopy back.

If I don't get the originals back, well, you're not missing much. The idea of the contest was to try and write badly, and I like to think that I'm as capable of writing badly as the next person.

The Mensa calendar is at it again today.  The last time they had one of these word ladder problems, I got annoyed with their answer because they inserted a needless letter swap in the middle.  This time around they did not do that, but when I solved the puzzle, I accidentally solved it in six steps instead of seven.

Make your way from BANK to LOAN in only seven steps, changing one letter at a time to make a good English word at each step.

Their answer behind the cut. )

I toyed with the words for a bit, and then the answer simply fell into place as quickly as I typed out the words.

Here is my solution behind a cut. )

I'm not entirely satisfied with my own answer, and I can't shake the feeling that with a bit more thought I could solve this in 5 steps.  I'll post an update here if I have enough free time this morning to contemplate on this further.

[Edit: Five steps would be a snap if we could just the word LOND into the dictionary.]

[Edit the Second: I did it!]

Last night we got our first foster family to look after.  There is a bit of a back-story with these cats, but you can read a bit more about it in [ profile] atara's journal.  The kittens seem to have recovered from their initial spook, and were chasing each other around the room this morning under mom's watchful eye.

Our two regular cats have their noses (quite understandably) out of join over this new addition to our household, but as long as we keep both groups of cats separated we shouldn't have any serous problems.

We haven't taken any pictures of the new additions yet, but I'll post them up here once we do.  That is, assuming I can get the kittens to sit still long enough for a picture.
